I am a retired career coach, university lecturer, memoirist, professional author, and marketing consultant. I never knew what I would be when I grew up.
I have been an active Jewish leader since 1981, and have participated in four previous missions to Israel. I have visited Israel many times, and spent a year volunteering in Kibbutzim when I found myself on the Golan during the ’73 War. The Syrians advanced within three miles of my Kibbuitz Gonen. I anticipate emotional empathy with those we meet who are experiencing the trauma now that I saw fifty years ago. It has remained an indelible experience that has motivated my dedication to Israel and the Jewish people. I hope to continue that legacy for the rest of my life.
My participation in this mission is to help fulfill the legacy of my wife, Ilene Serlin. Ilene dedicated the last three months of her life to originating and organizing this trauma mission, and finding Michelle Stravitz and AJMA as fiscal sponsors. Ilene worked diligently with Makor to make the trip viable.
For those who knew Ilene, we all remember her as a global leader who dedicated her life to healing through movement. She was also beloved by her family, friends, and community. Our marriage began mid-life in our 50s, and we took two imperfect people in an imperfect relationship and made the best of it we could.
This photo of the two of us was taken in Wadi Ram, Jordan, during our four-month trip in Israel, Turkey, Greece, and Jordan after Ilene was released from treatment for her first bout of cancer. We had two more wonderful years before she passed from incurable cancer on November 26, 2024.
Here is Ilene’s obituary that describes her professional life.
